Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand your concern and so would suggest you to decide where you want to save the image. At the confirmation screen notice the amount of space the image may take. If something doesn't look right you can still go back from this point and make adjustments.

A progress meter is displayed while the images is created and backed up. In this example a disk of about 15GB in size took under 20 minutes backed up to an external drive. Times will vary depending on your system and where you're backing it up to. After the process is complete you get the option to create a system repair disc which you should do and make sure to save it in a secure location. Follow the onscreen instructions and accomplish the process of creating system image.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately it wasn't the question I asked.

I know how to make a system image. My question was, is it the true that a system image cannot be made to a usb flash drive?

Presently 23GB of my C drive is being used, before I purchase a 64GB usb flash drive I would like to be sure that I will be able to create a system image on the flash drive.

Hi,

You can not use the option "On a hard disk" for usb flash-drive, I guess Microsoft does not see it as a hard drive.

You have to use a network option, but before you go that way you need to prepare your flash-drive.

1) format this drive in NTFS file system.

2) Once formatting is done, right-click on this drive and go to properties.

3) Go to "Sharing", see if this flash-drive is shared. If not go to "Advanced Sharing"

4) Check-mark "Share this folder", click on "Permissions".

5) In Permissions for "Drive Letter" window, under "Group or user names" you will see "Everyone" and below "read" permission selected, select "Full control". Click "Apply", "OK". Click "OK" in "Advanced Sharing".

6) Back in "(Drive Letter:) Properties" window you should be able to see under "Network File and Folder" the drive letter (some letter:) sais "Shared" and below the network path. Wright down this network path, or highlight-select-right click-copy.

7) Finally, go back to "Create a system image" and select "On network location" radio-button. Click on "Select" button to the right of it. The "Select a network location" window will open, type or paste the network path (from step 6, see above). Don't bother with "Browse" button. If you start typing, it might even autofill it (meaning you are almost there). Below you will see "Network credentials", type in your Windows 10 user log-in name and password. At this point "OK" button will come "alive". Click "OK", and go on with all the steps to follow. There will be a warning that a network option is not reliable or secure, disregard it, and go on.

This should do it, good luck. I hope some day Microsoft will wake up and do a better job providing end-user support.

How do you create a system repair disc on a USB flash drive that enables you to install the system image that you created on a USB flash drive? When I click 'Create a system repair disc', a message comes up that says this can only be done on a CD or DVD.

Third-party image software will store an image on a USB flash drive.

As a practical matter, however, you're better off storing images on a USB external hard drive aka portable hard drive. That will provide enough space to make images daily (or more often) and create a retention schedule.

Thanks Bulldog, but I am really interested in using software from within Windows 10 to install the Windows Image that I have made on a USB thumb drive.

Can anyone help me with this?

Using a different PC, download and save Windows 10.
Download and install PowerISO and follow the instructions on how to create a USB bootable disk.

Download and install PowerISO and follow the instructions on how to create a USB bootable disk.

I made a system image on a USB flash drive using the tools available in Windows 10. I want to make this image bootable so that I can reinstall it on my computer from the same USB flash drive. Can I do this using the method you have suggested?

Yes, you can use the method we suggested. Have you checked the link we provided earlier in this thread?

Unfortunately MS didn't provide the regular consumer customers with effective tool to create system image copy and then recover from this copy for any USB drive devices. All the same for Windows 10 as well for Windows 7. The described methods will work, as I understand, for system reinstallation, but not for recovering full hard drive. The problem is very critical for laptops because they have only one physical hard drive inside. There are few HD can be installed in a desktop and the problem will be simply solved, as I do. In other case, I recommend to use few 8 Gb DVDs and do directly as the Windows recommend. That is safe!

I think today that is verySHAME for Microsoft not to create and provide consumers directly with regular USB HD image copy - recovery software even in Windows 10.
